Women in Print (Issue No. 1)

$8.00

The inaugural issue of Women in Print focuses on nurse romance paperbacks. Not only have these novels been highly popular, but their book cover designs have attracted a cultish fan base. The covers were created by some of the most respected commercial illustrators—nearly all men, while the subgenre itself was predominantly written by women (or men working under female pseudonyms), featuring women, for an audience of women.

Each issue of Women in Print focuses on the ways printed media has depicted women. Books, magazines, and advertisements—most created by men—have often casually exploited women, treating them as objects or with condescension, while media created by women and aimed at women offers the opportunity for other narratives. Moving beyond fads and fashion, printed media can illuminate women's issues and concerns, providing a clearer idea of women's lives and experience.
