The City Is Ours #5: Manhole Covers
The fifth issue of "The City Is Ours," focuses on manhole covers, each uniquely designed, revealing stories about civic identity, history, and utility.
This edition showcases their evolution from mere functional objects to forms of artistic expression, featuring everything from ornate covers in Japan to the historical designs of early urban planners. The issue explores how everyday fixtures have inspired artists, engaged historians, and captivated the curious.
This is the penultimate issue in a series of six bookzines published by Finland's Other Editions. Each title in the series invites readers to explore their city, town or street with more curious eyes—one detail at a time. Each issue includes a photo essay focused on a specific detail of a streetscape, as well as works by international artists, photographers and observers. The images are combined with clear and simple language to inspire readers to observe the city as they never have seen it before.
Contributors include Adam Frint, Amir Dotan, Björn Altmann, Eli Zvuluny, Etienne Girardet, Gill Thorpe, Joost Markerink, Nicky Hirst, Timm Ulrichs, Tom Bob, and more.
