The Century of the Poster examines the poster as a direct and highly effective medium of visual communication.

Spanning more than a century of social, cultural, political, and technological change, the book offers a typological and stylistic history of the poster in Slovenia, tracing its emergence as a powerful presence in public space and its role in shaping political discourse, commercial culture, and modern visual identity.

First published to accompany the 2015 exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in Ljubljana, it draws on MAO’s extensive visual communications collection—the only one of its kind in Slovenia—as well as national libraries, archives, and private collections, the book presents more than 300 posters, from early twentieth-century lithographs to modernist, late modernist, and post-socialist design. Together, these works show how Slovenian designers contributed to broader developments in European graphic design while articulating distinct local histories and identities.

This English edition makes Dr. Cvetka Požar’s research accessible to an international readership for the first time. Scholarly yet visually rich, The Century of the Poster is an important reference for designers, historians, and readers interested in graphic design, visual culture, and the modern poster as both a reflection of its time and an active force within public life.
