n°52 — A Mode of Representation

By Manon Bruet

Through a combination of critical texts and a visual essay, this issue of France's Faire explores 3D computer graphics, sometimes called CGI, 3-D-CGI or three-dimensional computer graphics.

From the early visuals used as Mac screensavers to the creation of entirely virtual worlds, this issue aims to examine various approaches to representing reality and to highlight some of the aesthetic and economic issues associated with the development of this now indispensable method of image production.

For this edition, artist Harriet Davey was invited to take full creative license. Drawing from the realms of science fiction and fantasy, Davey crafts images of avatars that are at once strange and familiar, evolving within dark or enchanted world. Thought their work—most notably the long-running project The Real Unreal—they explore themes of fluidity and queer identity.

Faire is a bi-monthly publication dedicated to graphic design. Produced by Empire, the publishing arm of French design studio Syndicat (designers Sacha Léopold and François Havegeer), Faire is aimed at students as well as researchers and professional designers. Each issue addresses a specific object or theme and is written by a renowned author.
