Ornamental Portal
By Rietlanden Women’s Office
Originally designed for the fictional Von Wersin’s Kitchen—one of the imagined spaces within Richard Niessen's Palace of Typographic Masonry—this double-sided poster acts as both an ornamental gateway and narrative artifact. Its overlapping, fractured ornamentation is drawn from printed material created by a revolutionary socialist organization of women of color from 1970s New York.
On the reverse, a short text by Dirk Vis titled “The Redemptive Qualities of Ornament” offers a reflective discourse on ornament as a political and emotional form of visual language—foregrounding decoration as critical, rather than peripheral.
