Non-Latin Scripts: From Metal Type to Digital Type
This publication was produced to accompany a substantial exhibition at the ATypl (Association Typographique Internationale) conference in Hong Kong in 2012.
The volume includes an introduction to the Non-Latin Type Collection at the University of Reading by Paul Luna. The collection was built around materials from Linotype Limited in the UK, and subsequently enlarged, becoming a source for research relevant to typeface design for world scripts. The collection includes drawings for typefaces in Arabic, Indian, Thai and other scripts, as well as a wide range of printing examples, including newspapers and ephemera.
Fiona Ross contributes two essays—an overview of selected scripts from the Non-Latin Type Collection and "The Type Design Process for Non-Latin Scripts." Graham Shaw's contribution explores Non-Latin scripts and printing technologies, and John Berry offers a concise afterword.
