Hard Copy, Soft Copy: The Printed Page and Its Digital Doubles
Hard Copy, Soft Copy maps the shift in publishing, dissemination, and reception, from print to digital, mirrored in the trajectory of the typeface "Schmalfette Grotesk" by Swiss designer Walter F. Haettenschweiler from the 1950s through the 21st-century.
This publication reveals contemporary methods of gathering visual evidence, using text-based search methods of museums before turning to a machine-learning image-centric approach to uncover visual artifacts from vast digital collections. Includes multiple short essays and a rich visual overview of Schmalfette Grotesk's usage.
Published in conjunction with the exhibition Haettenschweiler from A to Z at the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, Switzerland.
