The history of graphic design for video game covers mirrors the evolution of gaming technology and consumer culture: in the early days of gaming (1970s-1980s), covers were simple and colorful, often featuring basic artwork or pixelated illustrations. By the 1990s, as gaming gained popularity, cover art became more sophisticated with detailed illustrations and paintings depicting game scenes or characters. With the transition to 3D graphics in the late 1990s and 2000s, covers began featuring rendered images of in-game models and dynamic layouts. As technology advanced further, covers adopted a photorealistic approach in the 2000s and beyond, resembling cinematic posters with detailed artwork and stylized typography.
