Exhibition catalog for Unmaking Democratic Design: Frederick Paulsen, an exhibition at Sweden's Röhsska Museum.

Designer Frederick Paulsen was commissioned by the Museum to interpret the notion of Democratic Design. He chose to design a chair for the purpose. And visitors to the 2019 exhibition were invited to create their own chairs alongside guest designers.

The catalog features custom letterforms designed by London-based design studio Europa for the visual identity of the exhibition; the type is constructed as if built out of planks of wood, showing how the results of a restrictive logic can lead to an intuitive solution. The bespoke type is matched by the use of spot colors throughout the catalog, which reference Paulsen's process, coloring wood with pigments and dyes to create brightly colored furniture.
