The City Is Ours #3: Superficial Damages
The walls of the buildings, sidewalks, and streets in the city are in contact with a wide variety of users, uses, and activities: people walking, parents running with strollers, bikes suddenly braking, skateboarders practicing their tricks, scooters and cars being driven at full speed, and much more.
All of these activities inevitably leave behind traces on the material surfaces, such as scratches, marks, and cracks.
These traces of wear are often seen as something negative. But if we look at them with a more open mind, what can scratches and other superficial forms of damage found in the city tell us?
This is the third issue in a series of six bookzines published by Finland's Other Editions. Each title in the series invites readers to explore their city, town or street with more curious eyes—one detail at a time. Each issue includes a photo essay focused on a specific detail of a streetscape, as well as works by international artists, photographers and observers. The images are combined with clear and simple language to inspire readers to observe the city as they never have seen it before.
Contributors include Menno Aden, Flores & Prats Architects, Helmut Smits, Hannele Rantala, Mathieu Tremblim, Pierre Descamps, Radka Palusova, Thierry Furger, and more.
