Plein Air (High Desert Test Sites 01) / Katie Bachler
In 2012, American artist Katie Bachler (one of the co-founders of The Women's Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles) became the first "Scout" to take up residency at High Desert Test Sites in Joshua Tree, California. Bachler's efforts included launching map-making and rag-rug braiding workshops; establishing the Scout's Book Club; and embarking on a busy schedule of local site visits, field trips, and spontaneous conversations. This volume serves as a diaristic encapsulation of her residency, marking the woman's dinner in the desert that later grew into the WCCW as well as a dance performance at Coyote Dry Lake by the Body City collective, and serving as a record of Joshua Tree's local culture and heritage.
