Artistype
By Tino Graß
The use of typography in art can convey an unmistakable presence that visually communicates a desired idea or attitude. But besides being a carrier of information or visual expression, it can also serve as a decorative element. For the fourteen artists in this book, including Ed Ruscha, Fiona Banner, Shannon Ebner, Liam Gillick, Tsang Kin-Wah, and Rose Nolan, it is a fundamental tool. Intentionally or not, this leads to the emergence of an individual “handwriting” in their work. According to Tino Graß, art and visual communication employ the same tools, which leads to similar or identical forms of expression. The artists he has interviewed and works he has gathered reflect an outstanding typographic quality and illuminate the use of typography in contemporary fine art practice.
