Typography In NYC 紐約字
In this volume, designer Joyce Shi documents typography in New York City between 2017 and 2021, creating a capsule collection of letterforms layered across the landscape.
From the smallest shop sign to the tallest billboard, Shi captures the layers of type that surround us in the city, exploring its beauty, complexity, and unique relationship to New Yorkers. With a keen eye, Shi invites readers to see typography in a new light, as a source of inspiration, memory, and identity. As a student studying at Parsons, Shi became interested in the way typography functioned in the city, finding its way into images of other subjects, marking moments and places, and becoming a vibrant part of her experiences.
This collection, an outcome of her observations, documents the typography of New York City in the early 21st century. Through Shi's photographs, we see how language and letters fill public spaces, creating a vibrant and visually complex urban environment.
Typography In NYC 紐約字 is a celebration of the power of type to create a sense of place and to connect us with our surroundings.
