Typographer in Residence: Laurenz Brunner

Regular price $38.00

Catalog published for Laurenz Brunner's 2016 exhibition Dictionary of the Illegible, the culmination of his residency at the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography [HMCT] at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Brunner, who was born in Zurich, lives and works as a designer in Berlin, Germany. A member of the Swiss type foundry Lineto, his work includes the typefaces Akkurat (2004) and Circular (2013).

As the inaugural typographer-in-residence at HMCT, Brunner chose to document his ongoing research into abstract forms of writing.

Reinterpreting found materials from art history to linguistics, from musical notation to science fiction, Brunner's exhibition shares an in-progress cartography of radical typographic phenomena.

With a strong emphasis on gestural expression (and moving beyond word specification), the signs highlighted in Dictionary of the Illegible offer a new perspective on potential typographic forms.
