Signs and Artifacts No. 5: CDMX, Mexico City
This publication documents storefront signs found in Mexico City. The volume, the fifth in Can Can Press and Secret Riso Club's series, is part of a larger body of work that seeks to document signs for local businesses as well as graphic artifacts from cities around the world.
The signs in this volume are iconographic representations of the neighborhood they are extracted from, and are marks of cultural identity. These sometimes ghostly artifacts of design connect us to an older city that will soon be destroyed or buried by gentrifiaction and the construction of the new. When isolated from the landscape, we can observe more closely the design and character of these signs and artifacts.
