The inaugural issue of Cast It typesets the article "type-founder" found in Francesco Griselini's 1769 Dizionario delle Arti e de' Mestieri [Dictionary of Arts and Crafts]. This text is the earliest known description of punch-cutting and type-founding published in Italian. The work is introduced with an essay by the printing historian James Clough. Eleven typefaces are used in the specimen, among them Giovanni De Faccio's Rialto, Rafael Dietzsch's Brasilica, and Riccardo Olocco's Zenon.

Cast It was launched by Italian publishing house Lazy Dog in 2016, at the behest of the Cooperativa Anonima Servizi Tipografici (CAST), an independent cooperative type foundry. The goal of the annual publication is to promote the history and culture of typography and type design while also showcasing the foundry's typefaces. Writing, letterforms, and typefaces were part of Lazy Dog's DNA, and the project has been a natural extension of their publishing focus.
