Best Dutch Book Designs 2016
The catalog for The Best Dutch Book Designs 2016 spotlights the outstanding design of thirty-three books published in 2016.
Each book was selected on its own merits by the jury (Remco van Bladel, graphic designer; Carolien Glazenburg, curator of graphic design at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Yolanda Huntelaar, graphic designer; Freek Kuin, creative director of drukkerij robstolk®); and Eelco van Welie, director of nai010 publishers).
The selected titles are not ranked and the book design itself reflects an egalitarian approach. The eight printers whose books were selected for recognition divvied up printing work for the project, creating 33 distinct signatures. Bound together by Boekbinderij Patist in different orders, the result is that there are 33 variant book covers, with each award winner appearing on the cover of at least a few volumes in the print run.
In keeping with the desire to give each winner a moment in the sun, the title of the book—in Dutch and English—is printed along the book's edges rather than on the cover.
Details about each winning publication are provided, with printing and production specs, design details, and recognition of special features. The winning volumes are also documented by numerous color photographs of covers, interior spreads, and back covers.
