Hall of Femmes publishes books which celebrate the work of women in graphic design and art direction. This volume profiles Lillian Bassman (1917-2012), a pioneer in the field of art direction who is usually remembered for her fashion and fine art photography. Bassman began as an assistant to Alexy Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar in the early 1940s, the golden age of American magazines. In 1945 she became art director for Junior Bazaar, a fashion magazine focused on teenagers. The magazine functioned as an experimental workshop, and a hot-bed for creative young talent. When the magazine folded publication, Bassman trained herself in photography, becoming one of Harper Bazaar's most prolific photographers and eventually becoming one of the most important fashion photographers of the 20th century.
