The results of the 2016 presidential election left many in a state of uncertainty and unrest. The subsequent protests and public actions inspired Maria Candanoza—the founder and curator of Object_ify 139—to commission flags from nine artists and designers: Erik Freer, Josefina Santos, Zak Jensen, Kristin Texeira, Dan Abary, Maria Candanoza, Monica Ramos, Rachel Levit, and Chiaozza. Teaming up with the Ace Hotel, Candanoza mounted an exhibition of the flags, each of which were designed to represent specific ideals and values—care for the environment, support for immigrants and refugees, healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community, and more.
This book brings together prints of all of the individuals flags along with artist statements. When read sequentially, the various flags interleave with one another, creating graphic juxtapositions. The publication is also designed so that the binding may be cut, and the flags viewed as individual 11×17 inch stand-alone posters.
