1:1:1 is a series of publications initiated by graphic designers Richard Niessen and Esther de Vries, the series explores forms of expression in design and offset printing.
The starting point for each issue is an interview with an artist or designer that focuses on the representation of his or her work. Eylem Aladogan, Metahaven, David Jablonowski, and Melanie Bonajo are among those who were selected to participate.
In their designs, Niessen & de Vries did not strive for a perfect reproduction or maximum legibility. Rather, they worked to turn each issue into a distinct ‘portrait’: apart from their dimensions (22 × 33 cm) and number of pages (16), each issue in the series was entirely different to the next.
This publication brings together the nine issues published in the 1:1:1 series, accompanied by an essay in which Els Kuijpers examines communicative design within the broader context of the production of meaning.
