Revue Faire No. 8 (A residency: Coline Sunier and Charles Mazé at Villa Medici)

$10.00

The eighth issue of Revue Faire [To Look at Things] finds graphic design theorist and educator Thierry Chancogne interviewing Brussels-based graphic designers and typographers Coline Sunier and Charles Mazé. They—along with François Aubart, Jérôme Dupeyrat, and Camille Pageard—are the founders of the publishers BAT and <o> future <o>. Mazé also teaches at the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT).

While a student at L'École supérieure d'art et design de Valence (ESAD Valence), Coline Sunier partnered with Grégory Ambos to create a front cover for a booklet for Zak Kyes' exhibition, Forms of Inquiry, in Valence. The design used a set of images sampled from the heraldic graphic patrimony of local emblems. When she subsequently founded her studio with Charles Mazé, the duo continued to undertake work that centered on collecting, cataloging and revival. Their projects drawing on this approach included the re-casting of Ésad Valence’s identity in 2012-2013; in work created during a residency at the Villa Médicis—the pair produced a publication, Come vanno le cose? [How are things going?], which collected together 1,512 inscriptions found on walls in Rome between September 2014 and February 2015, and in the identity that they developed for the Centre d’art contemporain in Brittany. Chancogne's interview delves into each of these projects, and he likens the pair's work to a sort of ethnography or conservation through the lens of graphic design and typography, suggesting that they have crafted a practice where they become harvesters of graphic design and sympathetic miners of minor culture.

Revue Faire, launched in 2017, is a regularly published critical publication dedicated to the analysis of graphic design, with a particular focus on France, and a broader focus on graphic design in Europe. Each year, 15 bilingual (French and English) 20-page issues are planned to be published. The series, curated by Sacha Léopold and François Havegeer, works with various invited authors; each issue documents a unique, tentacular subject of interest to graphic designers.
